Moveable Glass Walls

We recently embarked on a mission to source a supplier of moveable glass walls for one of our current projects. Our client’s home is situated on a beautiful one acre property and they wanted to take full advantage of the view. They wanted the ability to change the function of their space and instantly bring the outdoors in. We were not interested in a series of doors that needed to be opened individually and, other products were too heavy to push open or just not designed for our climate.

While at this year’s IDS 2011 in Toronto, we meet Monarch Movable Glass Walls and Conservatories. These custom-built bi-folding glass walls were just what we were looking for. The panels are exceptionally large and the frame profile is very thin which makes for a beautiful uninterrupted view. The system offers state of the art bearings, thermal closing hardware and thermally broken extruded aluminum which works for our cold winters. The distinctively modern glass wall provides a seamless transition from the inside to the outside and the hidden remote control screens can be pulled down when needed. More importantly, these walls can be easily opened with a slight push, and in an instant, you have a seamless transition to the outdoors. Here’s how it works:

The open walls give our client an intimate awareness of the surroundings. As the designers, it allows us to keep the integrity of the curtain wall design of the original structure, yet, provide the opportunity to open up the entire wall to the natural environment.

No doubt that glass is one of the biggest architectural trends of 2011. Glass is clean, fresh, environmentally green and architecturally attractive. There is a trend towards making the most out of existing personal space while making the indoor space seem larger and open.
