Meet Our New Architect

We are pleased to announce that our president, Francesco Di Sarra,  has successfully completed his registration requirements is now a licensed Architect with the Ontario Association of Architects.

Francesco studied at Carleton University where he received a Bachelor of Architecture degree with honours in 1996.  During that time he had the opportunity to study abroad in Rome which was one of the best experiences of his career.  He then found employment with various architectural firms where he acquired knowledge and experience in residential and commercial design, construction documentation, project development,  and municipal processes.

In 2002, he and his partner began their own design/build company which has grown into an award winning firm.  Francesco's commitment to design excellence and his leadership drive our successful innovative designs and cost effective project management. 10 years and numerous projects later, Capoferro Design Build Group is  successful firm with a staff of 12 and growing.

Artist and Friend: Pietro Adamo

Every once in a while a rare opportunity presents itself to design a home for an individual that is unique in his own right. This client is a painter and a true Artist, Pietro Adamo.

This month, Pietro Adamo, is being featured at SLATE in Vaughan City Hall.  The SLATE is a venue that showcases local talent,  and they hit a home run by featuring Adamo’s work. Pietro is a long standing client of Capoferro and he has a special part of our history. First, as a past art professor, he was my first mentor in design aesthetic and sensibilities, attributes that resonate in all our projects.

In 2010, we developed a concept for Pietro for both his home and art studio.  In this case we were given a blank canvas to design and create. He had very unique and particular needs.  This custom home contains a studio to accommodate large pieces of art work, production and office space to manage the business and a gallery to view pieces commissioned.

This home was designed to work with and be a part of its natural surroundings. The intent of the design of the structure is to be a part of the landscape, to emerge from it. In every aspect we looked at the views and the landscape of the property.  It soon became obvious to raise the main floor, taking advantage of the spectacular landscape overlooking the conservation area in the heart of Kleinberg. We then made a plaza of the parking area under the main floor to create shelter and privacy using natural elements to create an outdoor space. We also looked at the living expectations on the residential side and created a living room that was comfortable with beautiful views.
I have always said that our successes are built on the successes of our clients, we would like to congratulate Pietro on his exhibition at Vaughan City Hall. For more information or to see the SLATE click the following link SLATE and Vaughan City Hall

CNC Millwork and Design

Although it may not always seem like it, there are more tools in a designer’s toolbox than just a pencil and a ruler.  Today, many digital tools are available to assist designers in dreaming up new, complex forms and patterns to enhance their designs.

Fabrication tools, such as CNC (Computer Numerical Control), can make these designs into reality through their ability to follow computer guided instructions to cut along multiple planes.  CNC milling raises the standard in customization and precision building.  At Capoferro, we have been experimenting with these tools, with exciting results.

With CNC milling you are only limited by your imagination. Stay tuned for what we have in store next!

Capoferro Clients Weather the Storm

A severe storm in Toronto flooded parts of the city, knocked out power to thousands, and shut down roads and sections of the city’s subway system last week, as nearly 100 millimetres of water fell across the area in a matter of hours.  Rainfall totals measured 106 mm at the suburban Pearson International Airport after the storms blew through.

If history is any guide, the 95 millimetres or so of rain that hit the city of Toronto  like an exploding water balloon will wind up being a costly affair.

Hundreds if not thousands of residents in the country’s largest city have been left with flooded basements and waterlogged vehicles in the aftermath of the near-record rainfall...but not our clients!

We have received many phone calls and notes from our past clients who are so  thankful they weathered they storm and their home remained safe and dry .  So to all those clients, thank you for your messages for a job well done.

A message from our client Betty in Etobicoke....

Hi Frank,

How are you?  I haven't talked to you in a while. I hope things are going well for you and your family.  After the historic downpour on Monday, our house survived without any incident. The basement was dry as always and we found no issues anywhere.

We're lucky but also fortunate because you did such a good job building the house. Next door  had its basement flooded and had to replace the floor and about 2 feet of dry wall.

I just want to say thank you to you and grateful we're spared. I hope you're doing well and thanks again.
Betty

Is Your Home's Exterior Making A Promise It Doesn't Keep?

Now that summer is soon upon us, we are working on some exterior renovations for our clients.   Your exterior is your home's first impression. So you need to ask yourself....is your home's exterior making a promise it doesn't keep? Integrity and consistency are essential for architectural success, both inside and out.

Our goal for this project was to update a dated exterior in a manner that respects the existing architecture, and provide a design for the landscape at the rear of the house. We completed the interior a few years ago and this year, they have asked us to work our magic and transform the outside of their charming home.

We updated the exterior with contemporary materials in a contemporary colour palette.  It was important to introduce the architectural elements and to craft a living space that would extend outside of the home. This allows for more useable square footage in the summer months.  You can see from the video, that we maintained the integrity of the home's 1960's architecture, making the renovation authentic and true to the structure.

The video presentation shows both the before and after...

 Some notable features:
  • new cedar shingle roof
  • new roof over garage to give the house more presence and balance
  • powder coated metal cladding over the existing brick that integrates and conceals  exterior lighting
  • new metal clad doors and windows throughout
  • new terrace doors at the front of the house that link to outdoor patio spaces.  Planter walls create privacy and add interest to the front of the house
  • new deck at the rear with separated spaces for an outdoor kitchen and outdoor living room overlooking new infinity pool.

Our clients love the design and construction is set to begin this summer. We will post photos once the project is complete.

News | Capoferro Clients cook with Miele Gallery Caplans!

Most people try on pairs of shoes or test-drive a car before they buy. Why should your appliances be any different?

Last Friday evening our partners at Caplan's Appliances hosted a wonderful event for our Capoferro clients and staff.  We were invited to the Miele Gallery at Caplans for a night filled with fantastic food, product demonstrations and of course, great company!

When we arrived, we toured the Miele Gallery and had personalized product demonstrations for the vast array of fridges, dishwashers, ovens and vacuums.  We were impressed by the range of Miele appliances, from flush to framed, built-in or integrated, sleek stainless or paneled. Our clients and designers had personalized consultations with the Caplan's/Miele representatives to select what would best suit their lifestyle and kitchen design.
The on site chefs then prepared a wonderful meal for our group. While doing so, they showcased the ovens and cooks tops so we were able to see these appliances in action. Our clients were impressed with the induction cook tops, speed ovens, and the Rotisserie feature of the convention oven.  The star of the night was the new Miele Convection Steam Oven. The oven will steam your food but will also brown it as in a regular oven. This Miele single convection oven is also includes the Master Chef Functionality. This cooking mode is unique to Miele and you will not find anything like it within any other oven. This mode will cook your food to perfection depending on the information you enter through the control panel. All you must do is enter in the type of food that you are going to cook and then the oven will actually choose the correct cooking mode for that food. The results end with a meal that tastes like it was cooked by a professional chef, but was easily prepared by you at home.

We were then treated to yummy desserts, apple crumble and a wonderful chocolate mousse (cooked in the steam oven). One of my personal favourites was the cappuccinos made on the Miele Built In Coffee Systems, a perfect cup every time - its like having your own personal Barrista.

We would like to extend a THANK YOU to the entire team at Caplans,  Robert Caplan, Sam Fodaro and Marilyn McDermott, the chefs and Miele staff who made this a great night for our clients and designers! We were truly inspired by the wide range and style of Miele Appliances and of course, the food was wonderful (especially the goulash)! We had a wonderful time and walked away with a new appreciation and knowledge of the Meile Brand and the wonderful customer service of Caplan's Appliances.
