Thinking Outside the Box - FITHOME

Do you ever want to swing from a chandelier?  Imagine stainless steel bars with LED lights so you could swing from your living room to your kitchen, or go up and down your stairs. Why not? Design it so you can. Whatever your lifestyle, if you can imagine it, we can design and build it.

We often have special requests from clients to customize areas of the home to suit their lifestyle. Whether its a dumbwaiter in between kitchens or mirror TVs in the bath, mediation areas, secret passages or hiding sentimental messages in the graphics of room, we often need to "think outside the box" and be creative.

We put the task to our team members, if you could redesign the way we live, in any room, what would you do?  Partner,  Anthony Di Sarra, took on the challenge of the home gym...

After designing home gyms I’ve noticed that the location is always in the basement back corner or in garage sort of hidden. Why do we have to hide our exercising ways and equipment? I believe fitness should be focal point and most relevant design features in a home alongside structural elements. Why does it have to be in a room in the basement? How could we incorporate it throughout the home and make fitness a part of everyday life?

Imagine if......
  • Couches  doubled as a gluts hamstring developer, shoulder press, arm station, front leg curl and reverse, bands can be used for resistance training, all from the comfort of your living room.
  • Hide a cable crossover unit in the walls so hundreds of exercises are at your disposal.
  • Add a leg press or hack squat station as a piece of furniture? We are more inclined to exercise when all we have to do is get up. Going to the gym takes dedication which most people lack, so bring the gym to you? Health comes first.
  • Install a rug sized treadmill in front of kitchen sink or stove which can be set at a snail paced walk vs standing in one spot “still” and adding pressure on all joints while washing dishes or cooking.
  • Have us design a pivot mechanism with hydraulic lift on your bed so it can be used as an inversion table which will strengthen back and legs also alleviating stress and pain on our brains and lower back.
All it takes is a little imagination, and design expertise - we can do anything!

News | Apps we love!

Most of our clients, unless they are architects or designers or glued to HGTV (heaven forbid) would not be able to describe the difference between modern or contemporary, and realistically, they shouldn't have to. As designers, it is our job to help get their ideas and "likes" on paper. Its not always easy for clients to describe their style until now.  Magazines and photos are great, however, we find our clients love the new apps such as HOUZZ and Design Within Reach.

One our favourtie retailers Design Within Reach has just launched their own app.  DWR gives customers access to the best in modern design – including iconic works that have been in production since the mid-20th century as well as innovative items designed today – they  made design within reach. So if you are looking to purchase pieces from designers like Saarinen, Eames and Bertoia that were once  "out of reach" for anyone who did not know the secret handshake or have the patience to wait months for delivery, DWR is your answer.

If you are looking for ideas and photos of your style, HOUZZ is a good resource.  The best way to describe Houzz.com is that it is like a virtual gallery of images posted by architects, interior designers and builders who are hoping to get feedback and potential business from their featured imagery. The great thing about Houzz.com is that it is like Pinterest, only for all things related to home design- from fixtures to finishes and everything in between and they will also feature great articles about home design. It is perfect for people who are looking to design a new home, or who are looking to update what they already have. Simply put, house eye-candy.

Professionals post photos of their projects, users filter images by room or style to compile favorites, and everyone engages in free-flowing discussion. The site is now visited by some six million unique viewers each month (with millions more using its iPhone and iPad apps) and offers 500,000-plus photos from over 85,000 design experts, including  Capoferro Design Build Group

Happy surfing!

Project Update | Bathrooms are Big

In the Autumn issue of Toronto Home Magazine, our president Francesco Di Sarra, talks bathrooms.  We review trends, materials and styles and what's hot. You can read all about this fabulous Bathroom renovation we completed this past summer in this months issue.

Design experts say that personalizing the bathroom is the biggest bathroom trend today. "Modern décor by nature relies on natural materials to add warmth and personality, and textural interest to the design," says Francesco Di Sarra, founder and president of Capoferro, which specializes in the design and project management of architectural homes.

What's in: Di Sarra's clients are moving away from floor and wall tiles to slabs of marble or limestone. When cut and reassembled in the bath, it gives the impression of an uninterrupted flow of rock face and allows the full effect of any natural veining. Wood for flooring and even walls are a growing trend, with the adventurous going for zebra wood, with walnut, cherry and ebony also strong contenders.

Di Sarra’s clients are also experimenting with shower enclosures made of two-way mirror. The person in the shower can easily see out into the room, while anyone entering the bathroom will see only a silhouette. Wall-mounted mirrors may conceal televisions or LED lighting installed behind them, until they are turned on and shine through. "It keeps the technology hidden but also allows, say, a gentleman to see himself while shaving and catching the latest televised business or sports news out of the corner of his eye," says Di Sarra.

NEWS | It's Our 10 Year Annivesary!

It’s hard to believe that it has been 10 years since we began Capoferro Design Build Group. Since 2002, our company has grown from a two person construction company into a full service, award-winning design build company specializing in modern homes. We have grown in so many ways since our start, and we feel privileged to have served our clients throughout the years.   We would like to offer our sincere thanks to our family, clients, suppliers, trades and employees who have all contributed to our success, here's to another 10 years.

Our Story
Francesco Di Sarra had graduated from Carleton University with his Bachelor of Architecture Degree and had worked for various firms throughout the GTA. In 2002, he decided to begin his own renovation company. His brother, Anthony Di Sarra, had extensive experience in construction so they decided to go into partnership and began Capoferro Design Build Group - they haven’t looked back since.

Their beginnings were simple; they set up an office in a garage, bought a small pick-up truck and began working almost immediately. It was mainly small projects at first, basements, landscaping and additions.  That quickly grew into large additions, renovations and custom homes.   It didn’t take long before they began hiring staff and purchased an office building. 10 years later Capoferro is a bustling office with a staff of 12 and growing, and it’s time to move again!
One of the most important aspects to the success of our business is our award winning design. Our team is made up of experienced, qualified individuals. Francesco is currently in the process of completing his Architect’s license and our Design Associates are Intern Architects. All our projects have a certain modern contemporary style. For our team, it’s all about the details and function of each space whether we are building a multi-million dollar luxury residence, commercial retail spaces or custom homes.

What sets us apart from most design build offices is that we have always offered design, construction and project management services to clients.  We have an in house design team, interior design, field crew and project management staff.  It’s a full service, one stop shop for our clients.
Over the years we have been awarded the Award of Distinction from the Ontario Home Builders association for most outstanding Kitchen.  We have received many nominations and have won Awards from the BILD Association (Building, Industry and Land Development).  We are also a Subject Matter Expert to publications such as Money Sense Magazine and our projects have been featured in Style at Home Magazine, TorontoHome Magazine and CityLine .

We have designed and built over 50 custom homes and renovations over the years.  Some certainly stand out over the others; however, it is the project’s we have taken on over the last two years that have become our stamp. Our client’s see our projects and designs now and say “I want that”, and we are happy to oblige!

Happy Anniversary Capoferro!

Projects throughout the years....

Meet Our Team | Wing See Wu, Design Associate

Wing See has been a member of our team since 2010 and is an integral part of our office. She manages much of the design process, drawings and site instructions. She works very closely with principal, Francesco on our projects ensuring all design details and specifications are met. Wing See helps keep us up on all the "trends" and unique products.  It is such a pleasure to have her as part of our team!  Meet Wing See...

 1. Give me your two minute bio.
I was born in Hong Kong and moved to Toronto when I was 3 years old.  Growing up, it was always a toss-up between pursing art or graphic design, but when I was 16, I saw a photo of Eero Sarineen’s JFK airport in a textbook, and decided I wanted to be an architect.  Since then, I’ve received my Bachelor and Master degrees in Architecture at Carleton and McGill University, met and married my best friend, and am registered as an Intern Architect with the Ontario Association of Architects.

After working at various architectural offices in Toronto, and feeling uninspired by the work I was producing, I decided to start looking for work at alternative offices that were multi-disciplinary and/or more involved in R&D/fabrication and construction.  That decision led me to Capoferro, which was everything I was looking for and more!

2. Describe your style, like a good friend of yours would describe it.
I’m like Picasso in the sense that I’ve admired and experimented with many styles over the years.  At the moment, my interest is split between an aesthetic that is crisp/minimal/geometric/pure and another that eccentric/experimental/colourful/clever.   Sometimes you can see these two styles intersecting in my work.

3. What is the best moment of the day?
Lunch time!

4. How would you describe your first 90 days at Capoferro?
From the first day, I was thrown straight into the thick of the Argento project, with minimal overlap with the staff member I was replacing.  I was blown away, by the amount of passion and detail that this office poured into its work. Having no prior experience with construction and coordination with the field, made the task all the more daunting.   It was certainly a sink or swim situation.  The firm was also much smaller at that time, I was the only designer aside from Frank (who spent the majority of time on site), and we communicated primarily via phone.    It seemed strange coming from larger offices.   Since then I’ve learned a lot, and anything that seemed unusual or daunting has now become very normal.

5. What books do you have on your bedside table?
None at the moment but I would like to read The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro, who also wrote the amazing novel, Never Let Me Go.

6.  What project has given you the most satisfaction? Why?
It would certainly be the Argento project.  I’ve been working on this project since I started at this office two years ago, and it’s completely radicalized all my previous notions about the process of designing and constructing project, which is typically segregated from one another.  It’s a true design build project, in every sense of the word.   The amount of customization and innovation in the project has demanded that every designer, supplier, fabricator and installer involved in the progress to collaborate and put forward their expertise to produce a beautiful and resolved product.  It has been a wonderful process and as a result, Argento is a wonderful, and a thoroughly resolved project.  I’m proud and honoured to have contributed to it.

7. Who would you like to design something for?
A great fashion designer, like Alexander McQueen or Tom Ford:  someone who wants to take risks, great taste, and lots of resources!

8. Are there any architects from the past or current day who you appreciate?
Tadao Ando, hands down. I recently went on an architectural tour of Asia and was floored by how masterfully his work is designed and executed.

9. What do you like about the design/build industry and what would you change?
The design/build setup provides a clear line of communication between the designer and the trades who are executing the design work, which is an obvious benefit to both parties, and to the client because it often produces a better end result.  I hope the design industry as a whole gradually moves towards this type of set up.

10. Okay last question, PC or MAC?
I admire what Apple’s accomplished, but when it comes to computers, I’m the fat man with glasses.

News and Events | Our favourites...

We are back from our trip to this year's NeoCon design expo and conference at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago (what a great city!) It was a whirlwind  3 days sourcing everything from architectural panels and glass, furniture, fixtures and textiles. We had the opportunity to meet some wonderful new suppliers and see new products.  The seminars and courses also proved to be beneficial. Our designers attended seminars on LED lighting, healthier indoor environments, designing green buildings and renovating smarter.

There are some fabulous new trends in architecture and design this year and we are excited to share these new ideas and concepts with our clients!

Here is a small  selection of some our favourites (there were so many to choose from)

What is your favourite? We would love to hear your comments.
